About the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival
The San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival celebrates and fosters appreciation for the diverse ethnic communities in the Bay Area through an annual performance season of dance styles that have included traditional classical dance, sacred dance genres, vernacular dance forms, social dance and folk dance presentations.
Since 1978, the Festival’s performances have presented over 450 companies and soloists to tens of thousands of audience members.
The annual Festival program is selected from a series of auditions open to any self-defined ethnic dance artist or group living in Northern California. Work is evaluated by a panel of dance experts from around the country along with World Arts West staff.
Now working with a field of over 450 practicing companies and soloists from throughout Northern California, the Festival has taken significant leadership in broadening the public awareness of world dance and music forms and in encouraging many artists to maintain their distinct traditions.
