5th Quarter Bantabais the actualization of Latanya d. Tigner's 20 year vision, tracing the roots and retention of West African movement in the US, and particularly in HBCU marching band culture. Over a dozen workshops were given in Oakland and in the Southern United States, culminating in an interactive performance and panel discussion.
This Special Artist Commission is a project of Dancing Cy(i)phers in collaboration with Jackson State University's Sonic Boom of the South, Senegalese percussionist Magatte Fall, and Guinean dancer and choreographer Alseny Soumah. The educational legacy of this work continues with seminars and workshops at Jackson State University, Grambling State University, Tekrema Center for the Arts in New Orleans, and UC Berkeley.
