Equitable Contracts: The Basics

Picture
Most contracts contain the same basic language, but they can be intimidating or hard to comprehend. Our upcoming workshop will help you understand the standard components of contracts.
In the first half of the workshop, the World Arts West team and our legal expert, Matt Dedon of Art Law Access, will review common contract terminology like “force majeure,” “work for hire,” and “indemnification.”
In the second half of the workshop you will have an opportunity to ask the lawyer questions and confer with World Arts West team members on points to consider when contracting.

Registration Required
$5-$30 sliding scale

Archiving Dance Workshop: Digital Assets in partnership with Dance/USA

Join us for a user-friendly workshop on archiving digital assets, such as videos and photos. This workshop is especially for dance makers and anyone who has digital assets to track.

  • Got more records than you have space for? We’ll help you prioritize what to save.
  • Put your archive in hardware or the cloud? Learn how to choose among all the options.
  • Thinking about legacy planning yet? Either way you can benefit a lot from refining how you label files, manage records, and standardize practices across your team.

You’ll see all this and more illuminated by Shipra Shukla’s archiving work with Chitresh Das Dance Company & Chhandam School of Kathak. Dance/USA workshop co-leaders include Hallie Chametzky (Archiving Specialist) and Imogen Smith (Director of Archiving and Preservation). There will also be a Q&A opportunity.

This workshop was made possible by the California Arts Council, San Francisco Grants for the Arts, and the Walter & Elise Haas Fund.

Videography for Success

Videography For Success is a workshop designed for cultural artists in the dance community interested in using video documentation that takes you to the next level. Join Major Julian (Parangal Dance Company) and Jason Ditzian (Narluga Arts) as they share marketing and grant writing experiences and tips to improve the promotion, documentation, and writing of your art practice. Learn how Parangal successfully uses video to promote their creative work online, and how storytelling is key to creating and editing a compelling video sample for grant applications and more. Anne Huang, Executive Director of Worlds Arts West, will facilitate this one-hour online workshop.

Major Julian’s musical journey started over 3 decades ago, having trained in classical and contemporary music and performing with prestigious artists such as concert pianist Sally Christian as well as performed with the Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Prof. Timothy M. Smith. He has spent the last 8 of the 21 years in the San Francisco bay area's filipino folk dance community focused on music and dance of the indigenous people of the Philippines; applying a pragmatic approach marrying the fine art of music and the performing art of dance. Currently, Major moonlights as the Music Director of Parangal Dance Company, supporting their Mission to discover, preserve, educate, and inspire as they travel the world.

Jason Ditzian is an internationally touring clarinetist and Executive Director of Narluga Arts, a grants management and consulting firm working with socially-engaged artists and organizations. Narluga Arts specializes in hybridized, complex, collaborative projects, working with an extraordinary cohort of multidisciplinary artists who believe art has the power to change the world.

Digital Transformation 101: A Virtual Workshop

Best practices for teaching classes and presenting events online.
On September 30, World Arts West co-presented a virtual workshop on best practices for teaching and presenting online dance classes and events. Our amazing panelists of dance practitioners and cultural artists were Arnaud Loubayi of Gâta Bantu, Stella Adelman of Dance Mission Theater, and Lily Liang of Bopsidy. Facilitated by Anne Huang, Executive Director of World Arts West, panelists reviewed common mistakes and tips on how to avoid them. Topics covered included – platform differences, video playback, content, lighting, marketing, and much more. If you missed the workshop, check out our video recording and download the digital guide!
