The
Abhinaya Dance Company
The Abhinaya Dance Company of San Jose was founded in 1981 to present innovative and professional-quality
performances of South Indian classical dance forms. Abhinaya has staged several full-length dance dramas
choreographed by Artistic Director Mythili Kumar. Abhinaya organizes
self-produced full length concerts, frequently appears in shorter
sets at Bay Area festivals, develops original work rooted in
South Indian dance and music traditions and conducts lecture
demonstrations that explain the meaning of the hundreds of different
gestures and movements that are characteristic features of these
dance styles.
In
1991, Abhinaya collaborated with Chitresh Das Dance Company
to produce "The Guru", which combined North and South Indian
dance and music styles within the context of American culture,
and since that time has embarked on several other collaborations
with such companies as Gamelan Sekar Jaya, and Larry Reed's
ShadowLight Productions.
In
addition, Abhinaya operates an extensive instructional program
that passes on South Indian dance traditions to the young generation
of Indian Americans. The Abhinaya School of Dance was established
in 1981, and imparts the rich technique and theoretical content
of the Indian classical dance styles Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi.
