Eszterlánc Hungarian Folk Ensemble
The Eszterlánc Hungarian Folk Ensemble was formed in 1977 as a community group to perpetuate the folk traditions of Hungary and Hungarian peoples. Built from the moderate-sized Hungarian community of the San Francisco Bay Area, the group has performed at community functions, social events, and festivals for over thirty years. The Ensemble consists of twelve to twenty young adults ranging from age 16 and up. Most are of Hungarian heritage, although membership has never been limited to those with Hungarian backgrounds. The dancers receive their training in the Ensemble as well as from guest teachers and at workshops. The community served by Eszterlánc is vast, as appearances include international festivals, social events, patriotic holidays, and ethnic events. The Hungarian community alone, the group’s most supportive audience, numbers in the tens of thousands in California. Recently, the group has toured to Los Angeles, Sacramento, and even as far as Vancouver, British Columbia. Among the group’s recent accomplishments was the first-ever collaboration with the Kárpátok Hungarian Dance Ensemble of Los Angeles in 2004, a live performance with the Duvo Folk Music Ensemble in 2005, and a celebration of the group’s 30th Anniversary in 2007. Eszterlánc holds twice-weekly rehearsals at the Dance Co. in Hayward, California. The group puts on one fund-raising event each fall called the “Grape Harvest Festival,” from which it receives most of its annual operating funds used for studio rental space, guest artist fees, and costume purchase, cleaning and repair. Our dance director is Gábor Simon, and our business manager is László Lengyel.
